
The recent conclusion of the 3G and BWA auctions mopped up over 1 lakh crores for the Indian government. Not only is this a benchmark for the government auctions for future release of any controlled resources, but its a whole new wave of growth in the pipeline for India.
In China, its predicted that every 10% of broadband penetration would increase its GDP by 2.5%. India currently has a broadband penetration of less than 1% with its 9 million connections. Its expected grow at 100% for the next two years and by 2014 reaching a broadband population of 150 million thanks to the recent BWA licenses government has awarded to the likes of Reliance - via infotel, Airtel, Qualcomm etc.
Consumers will be inundated with a host of wireless broadband devices and services in the coming years. From phones and laptops to netbooks and iPad look alikes will enable users to watch TV and live cricket matches without interruption. It will open up new distribution channels for content owners in entertainment, education, governance, and health.
This will put existing players in the online/mobile space in hyper drive creating new wealth and opportunities. Exciting times ahead indeed!
